ImportantHigh-voltage battery — fire risk (KBA 16831R)
Insufficient monitoring logic in the battery management of the e-Niro (first generation) — cells can overheat, raised fire risk mainly when parked and charging. Built 19.05.2020–18.03.2022; 1,791 cars in Germany. The successor Niro EV (from 2022) is not affected.
Check: Check by VIN whether recall 261261 (KBA 16831R) has been done and whether the battery assembly was replaced.
Coverage: Authority-monitored recall: BMS software update (about 30 min); if the diagnosis finds damage, Kia replaces the complete battery assembly free of charge. Status can be checked by VIN at a Kia dealer.

EV details
Distance with one ~15-min fast charge at 110 km/h (modelled).
Is it enough for your day-to-day?
One charge lasts 5 days in winter (−10 °C) and 7 days in mild weather.
Using real-world range, charged to 80 %, 10 % reserve: 286 km per charge in mild weather, 222 km in winter.
Fixed reference (roughly Munich–Berlin): leave full, arrive with a 10% reserve, and charge only what the rest of the trip needs (80% max — past that the curve goes flat). Modelled from real-world range and the charging curve.
Mild means ≈ 23 °C, cold ≈ −10 °C without pre-heating — the same for every car, so the figures compare.
What does charging cost?
| €/kWh | Full charge | per 100 km | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home (wallbox) | €0.34 | €24 | €6.55 |
| Public AC | €0.50 | €35 | €9.64 |
| DC fast charging | €0.60 | €42 | €11.57 |
Prices from the open assumptions (adjustable in the calculator); consumption = mild real-world incl. charging losses.
Charging curve (DC)
NMC: high energy density (more range), usually charge to ~80% for longevity.
