ImportantHigh-voltage battery — fire risk (KBA 16242R)
The battery-monitoring software of the first-generation Kona Electric can detect thermal instability in the high-voltage battery too late — fire risk. Affects production 24.01.2018–15.07.2023 (13,523 cars in Germany). An earlier battery recall already covered Korean-built cars in 2020/21 (31.01.2018–20.03.2020, LG cells).
Check: Check by VIN whether recall 61D004 (KBA 16242R) has been done; for cars built up to 03/2020 also the earlier action 01D076 (KBA 010314) and whether the battery was replaced then (workshop record).
Coverage: Manufacturer recall, free of charge: new battery-management software; according to electrive the battery is replaced as a precaution in some cases. Completion can be checked by VIN at a Hyundai dealer.

EV details
Distance with one ~15-min fast charge at 110 km/h (modelled).
Is it enough for your day-to-day?
One charge lasts 5 days in winter (−10 °C) and 7 days in mild weather.
Using real-world range, charged to 80 %, 10 % reserve: 304 km per charge in mild weather, 232 km in winter.
Fixed reference (roughly Munich–Berlin): leave full, arrive with a 10% reserve, and charge only what the rest of the trip needs (80% max — past that the curve goes flat). Modelled from real-world range and the charging curve.
Mild means ≈ 23 °C, cold ≈ −10 °C without pre-heating — the same for every car, so the figures compare.
What does charging cost?
| €/kWh | Full charge | per 100 km | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home (wallbox) | €0.34 | €24 | €6.06 |
| Public AC | €0.50 | €35 | €8.91 |
| DC fast charging | €0.60 | €42 | €10.69 |
Prices from the open assumptions (adjustable in the calculator); consumption = mild real-world incl. charging losses.
Charging curve (DC)
NMC: high energy density (more range), usually charge to ~80% for longevity.
